Looking for a little bit of European elegance for your next vacation? Then romantic Salzburg might just be your ticket. Situated near the German-Austrian border, Salzburg is a charming city overflowing with history and stunning medieval and baroque architecture. The beautifully preserved Old Town (Altstadt) is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Imagine narrow passageways and cobblestone streets lined with specialty boutiques and retail outlets set behind elaborate facades. A leisurely stroll will unveil many historical sites and Salzburg old world charm.

Famously known as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg is celebrated as a cultural centre for music and host to the annual Salzburg Festival since its inception in 1920. The festival is an arrangement of operas and concerts held at various venues throughout the city during the months of July and August. Salzburg is also famed as the backdrop for the box office hit The Sound of Music. Fans travel from all around the world to visit locations featured in the film and to learn more about the Trapp family story. Bursting at the seams with centuries of history and culture, imagine yourself exploring the sights and sounds of this grand old city. Salzburg boats an impressive array of churches, palaces and the mighty Hohensalzburg Fortress (built in 1077) overlooking the city.

Why not sample the many culinary delights that Salzburg has to offer. Whether you seek regional cuisine or gourmet delicacies, Salzburg is home to a number of award winning restaurants. Considered Austria’s beer capital, Salzburg beer culture is said to have its roots in 600 years of beer making traditions. There are many things to love about Salzburg and one of my favourites is the Mozart Ball (Mozartkugel), named after Mozart. Made from marzipan, nougat and chocolate, the Mozart Ball is a delicious sweet created by local confectioner Paul Fürst in 1890. Unique to Salzburg, the Mozart Ball is a must try for lovers of sweet things.

Anytime is a good time to experience the grandeur and romance of this beautiful city. Summer or winter, Salzburg offers seasonal activities to compliment your chosen style of travel. Perfectly situated, Salzburg is an easy distance to Innsbruck, Austria and Munich, Germany. You won’t be disappointed.
